Thermo Fisher Scientific Introduces Updated Laboratory Automation Workflow Software

Going by the name 'Thermo Scientific Momentum', the companies latest software release claims to be the first process and data integration solution to facilitate standardized real-time, data-driven decision making.

Designed as a workflow software for laboratory applications, Momentum lets users define, execute and monitor complex processes in an intuitive visual environment. The software enables multiple workflows to be managed in real-time, through data-driven decision-making; eliminating the need for customized data handling. Additionally, its open topology editor allows the user to specify the design, configuration and operation of their individual system and plug-in different schedulers to support a broad range of processes and workflows. Users can also manage multiple isolated units of automation, treating them as part of a larger connected system.

Initially, Momentum is to be offered to drug discovery and development labs as the solution is well suited to their numerous automation applications such as hit picking, inventory management, HTS/HCS screening, cell/tissue culture procedures, and laboratory workflow management.

Momentum provides full audit trails and detailed error logging for process traceability, dynamic rescheduling and instrument pooling for accommodating workflow changes and instrument hot-swapping and compatibility with any combination of instruments and plate movers, independent of vendor.

While all these features are desirable, one in-particular stands out; its ability to present data from a variety of instruments in a standardized format for consistent storage in an SQL database – a facility that will save users much time.

Couple this with its functionality for integrating and monitoring automated, manual and de-localized systems facilitates and easy incorporation of new or upgraded technology or processes and you have a well rounded system that should offer exceptional operational longevity.
